Kimm
Kids in Media and Motion ( kimm) are an innovation aiming to introduce Digital Media in the classroom in creative ways.
Their projects hold the similar structure of doing a project the traditional way this holding a project definition and project construction. The only major difference is it centered on the children, as teachers and children discuss issues but children break into smaller groups and allocates tasks. Children also have complete control over the production process; here children work with digital media and traditional media like paper Mache. Incorporating these two Medias together show how we can integrate new media with traditional media, we don’t have to abolish this traditional media because some aspects of it are fantastic, paper mache and posters still allow children to create and still think about the processes that they are undertaking, however traditional media does not let us go back and extend our work as our knowledge grows and this is one thing that digital technology will always have as an advantage.
The great thing about this project is not only are children driving their own learning, interacting with their medium and dwelling into meaningful learning. But all students are involved in the process so therefore it becomes a collaborative process children get the opportunity to share their opinions and their experiences; they also get to learn from each other.
This kind of project is great it shows children learning through technology not learning from it, they are constructing their ideas and reflecting through a variety of mediums that still allow children to construct and build their ideas and most importantly reflect.
At the end of their presentation children present their work to fellow class members, this makes the learning meaningful however we can extend out ideas through creating a blog that shows the world our thought and our processes, we can include pictures that range from the beginning to the end piece, we can also place our final product on a vodcast. The possibilities are endless, all of which will give students are much wider audience, this wider audience will also be able to comment on the children’s work. This will ultimately give children an extra sense of ownership over their work.
It is evident that a lot of good things come out of using technology in the classroom children expressed a joy and a love for it; it really did act as a motivator. I think the main problem is we have media literate children we are growing up in a digital age however teachers need to catch up.
